A Fresh Take on Iconic Beauty

By Amy Koehler

Looking back at the trailblazing iconic women who paved the way for the rest of us , you can ’ t help but be inspired by their actions , as well as their take on beauty . Each lady is unique , full of individualism and passion .

One of the first that comes to mind is the classic Jackie Onassis . With her contributions to preserving the arts , her renowned fashion sense and her constant poise and grace , she was a true lady . Her makeup style was always clean and classic , which is timeless and flattering at any age . Her look consisted of a lip color complimenting her outfit , very subtle blush , perfectly even skin and a subtly defined lash , with very little shadow .
Onassis always had the most flawless-looking skin . In order to recreate her effortless beauty look , we should start by perfecting the skin , which is even more important than actual foundation . Properly cleanse , tone and moisturize , and I like to follow that with a skin perfecter to give that instant Snapchat filter effect . My all time favorite is Dreamskin l . Use the minimum cover foundation so that your skin looks even , smooth and healthy . For eyes , the main idea is to softly define the lash line . Use a fleshtone lid primer , and then follow with a waterproof liner , creating a double tightline effect . Lift the lashes by pushing the liner into the root from below and then above the lash base . This creates a simple dark definition that sandwiches the lashes so they look naturally fuller . You shouldn ’ t notice the liner at all . It should just look like your lashes are thick and fuller . Then apply your favorite lash primer and mascara .
For lips , follow with a color in a similar tone as your outfit , and line with the same tone of liner to give your lips a clean edge . When working backstage , sometimes I am so rushed creating looks that I will just pop the lip color softly on the cheeks and blend with my finger ( try a matte color if you tend to be oily ). For an Onassis look , softly blend
over the cheek with a foundation brush . Don ’ t worry about cleaning the brush off . The leftover foundation will help create a soft focus effect that is truly Onassis-inspired . To see the step by step , watch my tutorial on YouTube @ AmyKoehler .
My next inspirational lady is not only beautiful , but possibly one of the most influential women in the world . She ’ s dubbed as the queen of all media , and had the highest-rated television show of its kind in history . She certainly has her own sense of style , and her makeup look has definitely evolved into something timeless and flattering for a woman looking for a style that works on hooded eyes . She rocks a smoky eye , but it doesn ’ t come out looking like a raccoon . Even though she wears jet black shadow , it is strategically placed to look soft for day , and usually avoids placing shadow or liner on the lower lash line , which also keeps it soft . If you are wondering how to do this , I go step by step in my smoky eye tutorial on YouTube , taking you through the quickest and easiest application . When she wants to glam it up for the red carpet , Winfrey adds some lashes for drama and chooses a lip color with more of a pop . She finishes her look with slightly more blush to balance it all out .
