HEALTH & WELLNESS I AM PROUD TO SUPPORT PEDAL THE CAUSE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER. By DONALD BROUGHTON Team Leisa Zigman I love to ride bikes, and what better way to do it than to help raise money for a good cause? I joined Pedal the Cause in 2013, riding on Team Leisa Zigman. Pedal the Cause is more than the region’s top cycling event. It is a way of life, a celebration, and a movement fueled by the courage to end cancer. My story? My mom died of cancer when I was 5 years old. I ride to honor her memory. Her death changed my life in many ways. While horrible, it made all the challenges of my life that were yet to come, seem not so bad. It gave me a much closer relationship with my grandmothers and aunts who tried to fill the void she left. It instilled a sense of urgency in me. Life is short, make every day count. It whispers in my ear every day. What I like most about Pedal the Cause is that 100 percent of your donation goes directly to accelerating cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Interested in joining Pedal the Cause? You can start a team, join a team, or register to ride solo. Everyone can join the fight against cancer - with six different distances, two different spin options, a virtual rider option, and volunteer opportunities - there is truly something for everyone. The Pedal the Cause event is held one weekend a year, but there are opportunities to be involved with the organization year round. Visit pedalthecause.org. 65 SAVVY I SOPHISTICATED I SASSY
