T
here’s been a change in the landscape at Laumeier
Sculpture Park: A larger-than-life, 12-foot-tall sculpture,
“Deer,” is now part of the park’s permanent collection.
The steel, reinforced-fiberglass likeness of a white-tailed
doe is by artist Tony Tasset, whose 2007 sculpture,
“Eye,” is already a Laumeier fixture. The installation, now on view in
the Way Field, is in celebration of the park’s 40th anniversary.
The search continues for Shakespeare Festival St. Louis' next artistic
director, following Rick Dildine's departure. Jennifer Wintzer has
assumed the role of interim producing director, while Bruce Longworth
is serving as associate artistic director. Dildine vacated the post last
month to become the new artistic director at Alabama Shakespeare
Festival. The company has also announced that its 2018 production
of “Romeo and Juliet” will be directed by Egyptian-American director
Taibi Magar. Based in New York, Magar is a graduate of the Brown/
Trinity MFA program; and has directed and developed work for Ars
Nova “Underground Railroad Game (a New York Times and Tony
critics’ pick),” The Foundry, The Theatre for a New Audience and the
Women’s Project Theatre.
The Radio Arts Foundation (107.3 on the FM dial) is hosting its
inaugural Wine & Jazz Under the Stars fundraiser this month at a
former vaudeville house on The Hill. The event, co-chaired by Babette
Meiners and Peggy Ritter, benefits RAF’s mission to promote classical
music and the arts in St. Louis. A sampling of wines from around the
world and appetizers will be served, and music will be provided by the
Carolbeth True Trio. The Friday, Sept. 15, gathering begins at 6 p.m. at
the historic Columbia Theatre. For more information, visit rafstl.org.
The Angel Band Project, the St. Louis-based organization that
promotes healing from sexual abuse through music, is holding its
signature fundraiser this fall. Soiree with the Angels will take place
Saturday, Nov. 4, at Edward Jones Headquarters. In addition to a
cocktail reception, dinner, and live and silent auctions, a highlight of the
event is a “competitive” dessert auction, during which attendees can bid
on a special treat created by local pastry chefs for their table. Proceeds
from the event will support music therapy programs and special music
projects offered at no cost to sexual abuse survivors. Event co-chairs
are Rachel and Matt Boxdorfer, Ralph and Julie Grant, and Ellen and
Michael Hunter. For more information, visit angelbandproject.org.
The longest-running and most well-attended hot air balloon event
in the country is celebrating its 45th year. For the first time, Art Hill
will serve as the venue for the Great Forest Park Balloon Race. The
weekend begins with the balloon glow and fireworks on Friday, Sept.
15. Race day events start at noon on Saturday, Sept. 16.
