PUBLISHER'S NOTE
All You Need
is Love
T
his month is all about heart. Heart health, falling in love and loving diversely are all
recurring themes in this edition - one of my favorites.
Even though most of us know that February is National Heart Awareness
Month, we don’t always practice the things that promote heart health. This issue
reminds us to take the time to love ourselves more in our quest for better or
lasting health as we search for love, or as we work to deepen the love we have for others. We are
particularly grateful for organizations like the American Heart Association that work so tirelessly
every day (not just in February) to help save lives.
February is also the time when most of us are acutely aware of the status of our romantic
lives. If we are single, we ask ourselves why we can’t find the right person, or we are grateful that
we made it through the first phase of a breakup and survived it. Or we might just be content to
be alone as we work on other areas of our lives like career, volunteerism or happily raising our
children as single parents.
If we are married or in a relationship, we wonder if this is all there is because we feel unfulfilled,
or we are thankful that we still feel the passion for our significant other. And if we lost a loved one,
we miss them and reminisce about those special moments that made our love for them remarkable.
The point is, whether we like it or not, love makes the world go ‘round. It gives us purpose, fills us
with passion, fulfills us or hurts us. Whatever phase of love we are in, it is helpful to self-assess and
get a little advice from the experts. In our Love & Romance section, we are delighted to feature
several women who share helpful tips to assist us in all areas of love, even self-love.
For Black History Month, I encourage you to visit the Missouri History Museum for the exhibit
“#1 in Civil Rights: The African American Freedom Struggle in St. Louis.” It examines the local
civil rights movement and the city’s leading role in advancing the cause of racial justice. As a
community, we are aching for resolution from all the divisive things that keep us from seeing each
other as individuals, different from each other, yet the same. I also encourage you this month to
spread the wings of love and get to know someone who is different from you. Choose love.
