FASHION & STYLE Original R&B Men with Style T he 1980s was an era of pop music, big hair and flashy fashion, stamped in music and fashion history by legendary artists like Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Elton John. As we moved into the 1990s, R&B took over the charts, bringing a certain smooth swag to the music scene. A clean style emerged from musicians, with artists like Brian McKnight, Boyz II Men, Ginuwine, Montel Jordan and Keith Sweat producing romantic, emotional music, making concert-goers and cassette tape buyers lifelong fans. At least two of those artists continue to garner as much interest as they did back then. Women still go “gaga” for R&B legends Ginuwine and Brian McKnight. Both will be in St. Louis for a performance on Aug. 25 to help raise funds for the Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls' Club. Their award- winning staying power has been as much about the music as it has been about their sex appeal, and their ability to draw fans in with their smooth sounds, sensual vibe and good looks. They have continued to bring the entire package that creates legends - in an era when attention spans are short and pop culture evolves so rapidly. We asked both artists about their style choices. Ginuwine GINUWINE Gazelle: How would you describe your wardrobe style? Ginuwine: I’ve always been into fashion, even before my career started. I knew I wanted everybody to pay attention to me. Even now, I don’t keep up with all the new styles, but if something catches my eye, I’m going to get it. I don’t mind taking a risk with my wardrobe. Gazelle: What are your wardrobe must-haves? Ginuwine: I must have fresh T-shirts, jeans and a suit. Who doesn’t like a good tailored suit? I also need fresh sneakers and my favorite Giuseppe Zanottis. I’m on the road doing shows and appearances, so I need to have everything ready to go and easy to pack. I wouldn’t be the “Same O.G.” if I didn’t. BRIAN MCKNIGHT Gazelle: How would you describe your wardrobe style? McKnight:   Versatile. I can do dressed “all the way up” or “all the way down,” and still have style. Gazelle: What are your wardrobe must-haves? McKnight: Any of my Tom Ford suits. SAVVY I SOPHISTICATED I SASSY 67
