I t is history in the making at the Missouri Historical Society: An inaugural fundraising event combining history and fashion, “Threads: History Never Looked So Haute,” is planned for spring 2019, with a runway show that promises to enthrall and excite the most stylish of St. Louisans. The April 13 event will feature a group of local designers, each paired with an item from the museum’s clothing and textiles collection of more than 18,000 pieces. Senior curator Shannon Meyer told Gazelle that participating designers were given images of 40 pre-selected artifacts from the collection and asked to choose an inspiration piece. “The selections included things like a circa-1900 fireman’s parade shirt, a 1950s prom dress, a late 18th-century ladies’ pocket watch and a St. Louis city flag,” Meyer said. Be sure to save the date, and watch this space for ticket information and other exclusive event details. Veronica McDonnell is the event chair; Laura Kathleen Baker and Michael Drummond are runway committee co-chairs. Gazelle is serving as the event’s media sponsor. Safe Connections, one of St. Louis’ longest-serving organizations that works to prevent and end domestic and sexual violence, is holding its Lotus Ball on Friday, Nov. 9, at the Missouri Athletic Club downtown. Proceeds from the event will support Safe Connections and its efforts to provide counseling and 24-hour crisis care for survivors, as well as its violence prevention program, all available free of charge to those who need it. For ticket information, visit safeconnections.org. Don’t forget: The Chamber Music Society of St. Louis has rescheduled its 10th Anniversary Gala honoring conductor Leonard Slatkin. The “Notes from Hollywood - The Sequel” fundraiser, featuring Slatkin’s salute to Tinseltown film composers, was postponed following Slatkin’s heart bypass surgery in May. A few VIP packages, which include valet parking, pre-concert cocktails, preferred concert seating, a post-concert dinner, and a copy of Slatkin’s book, “Leading Tones,” are still available. VIP and concert-only tickets can be ordered through chambermusicstl.org. Congratulations to the 2018 YWCA Leaders of Distinction award recipients, who will be honored at the annual Leader Lunch at Union Station on Thursday, Dec. 6.
