Laumeier Sculpture Park’s next executive director assumes her new role this month. Lauren Ross, most recently the curator of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Institute for Contemporary Art, has been announced as the park’s new leader following an extensive nationwide search. Ross also served as curator and director of arts programs at New York City High Line. Over the years, she has curated a number of exhibitions and public art projects, and has published more than three dozen catalogs, essays, features and reviews on modern and contemporary art. Springboard to Learning’s Lip Sync Battle and Gala will be held this year on Friday, Oct. 5, at The Caramel Room. In the next few weeks, contestants will practice performing a song of their choosing with the assistance of professional coaches. Get ready for a Moroccan-themed, “1,001 art-filled nights” at this year’s Grand Center Inc. gala. For the first time, the event on Friday, Sept. 28, will be held in The Big Top at its new permanent location on Washington Avenue. The 2018 honoree is Lawrence Group CEO Steve Smith, who is being hailed for his contributions to the Grand Center Arts District and beyond. Smith’s latest venture, the Angad Arts Hotel, to be located next door to Powell Hall, is slated to open in the fall. We’re told the boutique property, whose motto is “Stay Colorful,” is the first to allow guests to choose a room based on their “mood,” whether it’s red, green, yellow, blue, etc. The Angad will also house the Grand Tavern restaurant, by celebrity chef David Burke, as well as an outdoor rooftop terrace and spaces for private events.
