158 History of Garuda Indonesia 1949–1969 1949 1959 1970–March 29, 1985 1970s 1980s GARUDA INDONESIA’S UNIFORM HISTORY THROUGH THE AGES Since 1949, the uniform of Garuda Indonesia’s cabin crew has changed several times, adjusted and updated to suit the changes to the company’s logo, aircraft livery and cabin interior, as well as to reflect the company’s image. The cabin crew uniform worn between 1949 and the 1960s was simple and functional. The original uniform was designed in an era of developmental post-independence for the Republic of Indonesia. In the 1970s, the cabin crew uniform was updated to look more fashionable. Hanae Mori, a renowned Japanese designer at the time, designed the uniform as a mini sack dress, with beige on top and orange on the bottom. The uniform was topped off with an orange hat. A unique Indonesian touch was introduced to the cabin crew uniforms in the 1980s, with a quaint brocade kebaya for senior female cabin crew. The kebaya came in colours of orange, deep blue and dark green, and was matched with a traditional brown batik long skirt. Also in the 1980s, junior female cabin crew wore orange or beige sack dresses, matched with a batik silk scarf: orange scarves with brown accents were matched with orange sack dresses, and brown batik scarves with beige accents were matched with beige sack dresses. The uniform was completed with a short jacket and belt in the same colour as the sack dress, and an orange hat. In the years that followed, Garuda Indonesia maintained a strong Indonesian element in the uniforms of its female cabin crew, for 1985 1999 example, the tenun weaving pattern used on the blouse and scarf worn as a transitional uniform in 1985. Entering the 1990s, a blue tenun weaving pattern, designed by local designer Prayudi, was introduced to the uniforms of the female cabin crew. In 1999, their uniform used the ‘Argopuro’ motif in tosca and dark blue, which was designed by Iwan Tirta. In line with the Corporate Identity (Brand) Refresh programme, in 2010 Garuda Indonesia introduced a new uniform for male and female cabin crew
