1 There ’ s nothing that completes an outback experience quite like cooking – and eating – damper in the great outdoors .
2 Weano Gorge is considered the perfect introduction to the walks of Karijini .
5 Senses – Sound OPERA IN THE GORGE
Ultimately , the kind of experience you ’ ll have at Karijini depends on how willing you are to leave your comfort zone ...
job now involves taking adventurous tourists canyoning ( that ’ s abseiling , swimming , hiking and climbing ) across the deepest gorges of the park – many of which are a class 6 and restricted for the general public .
“ I ’ ve always been drawn to this corner of the world ,” admits Carter , who says her connection to the land she frequented often as a child is the result of a combination of the heat ( during summer , temperatures frequently top 40 ° C , the deep-red earth and crystal-clear waterways . “ It feels like an oasis ; but not only that ; you can ’ t help but feel a deep connection with the Earth ’ s history .” Admittedly , it ’ s hard not to feel that connection ; the gorges that draw in the travellers have been shaped by the elements over hundreds of millions of years , and there ’ s some evidence they originated some 2,500 million years ago .
That ’ s not to say the gorges don ’ t have their drawbacks ; many often present as small creeks hidden in hillsides , but suddenly plunge into dark voids up to 100m deep – a fact that has seen restrictions put in place to avoid accidents from happening .
As a guide , she recommends kids , older travellers and the unfit ( or just plain terrified ) stick to discovering the more gentle gorges to the east of the park and leave the more challenging gorges to the west of the park for those who are fit , willing and able . “ Ultimately , the kind of experience you ’ ll have at Karijini depends on how willing you are to leave your comfort zone ,” she says . “ You have to know what it is you ’ re after and how badly you want it .” And isn ’ t that true of all journeys ?
