In the mood for something a little more ? How about hanging off rock-faces by your fingertips to plunge into freezing waters ?

Refusing to let geology steal the limelight , armies of red kangaroos , rock-wallabies and echidnas ( oh , okay , and perhaps the odd snake ) vie for your attention alongside shrubs heavy with wattle and yellow-flowering cassias – a natural diversity of native flora and fauna that dates back more than 20,000 years . The Banyima , Kurrama and Innawonga Aboriginal people are the traditional custodians of this land .

Once you ’ ve checked in , it ’ s a matter of heading straight to the park ’ s goanna-shaped visitor centre .
“ Not only is it a great introduction to the park with its interactive displays showcasing the region ’ s geology , fauna and flora , but you ’ re also given the opportunity to sit with the local elders and listen to their stories , which is not an experience you ’ re likely to find anywhere else ,” Olive says . Pencil in , too , a swim in the pristine waters of Joffre Gorge , an outdoor picnic at scenic Oxer lookout , and either a hike down Dales Gorge – much loved by regulars for its terraced cliffs , stream , waterfalls and pools – or down Hancock Gorge , known for its steep hike down to Kermit ’ s Pool ( so named for its striking emerald colour ).
