For the second in our series of culinary adventures , Garuda Indonesia ’ s delicious Ayo Liburan – Culinary Series campaign takes us to Banyuwangi and Labuan Bajo , where seafood is prized for its versatility and blends with local traditions .
Last month , for Garuda Indonesia ’ s Ayo Liburan – Culinary Series campaign , we tasted some of the delights of Malang and Belitung , unfolding a legacy of simple noodles and meatballs . For this issue we continue with that theme as we dip into the areas that define Indonesia as an archipelago – its coastline and seas – and some of the bounty that can be found within .
Any coastal village or city across Indonesia will boast about its own version of grilled snapper , mud crab cooked in ‘ Padang sauce ’, bountiful fried calamari , or even the simplest pleasure one can get from the sweetness of fresh shrimps and cockles – all with unlimited servings of rice . Banyuwangi sets a fine example of this , thanks to the authentic dishes that incorporate both local produce and seafood ; while across the horizon , Labuan Bajo has more than just fresh seafood . It is also a culinary melting pot as can be seen from the variety of cuisines coming from different cultures , standing side by side with a rich array of native delicacies .
Banyuwangi The beautiful coastal town of Banyuwangi on the easternmost shore of Java was once just a simple ferry-crossing hub for those heading to Bali . However , tourists have begun to see Banyuwangi in a new light , and it ’ s become a fine addition to the bucket list for those who seek something new and adventurous from Indonesia .
On the northern side of Banyuwangi lies Baluran National Park , dubbed ‘ Little Africa of Java ’ for its rich wildlife and expansive savannah . Not far from the town , towards the northwest , sits the mesmerising blue crater of Mt Ijen , which draws the attention of nocturnal travellers much like Mt Bromo does . Head south , and the sea turtle conservation at Ngagelan Beach is a joy to experience .

1 The use of asam wadung is preferable to regular tamarind for kuah pindang gendam .
2 These hardworking sulphur miners of Mt Ijen can haul fully loaded baskets weighing 70 to 90kg in one go !
3 Ngagelan is one of the beaches in the southern part of Banyuwangi , known for its turtle conservation centre .
