The brave can try torchlight tours or even a spot of adventure caving, strictly not for the claustrophobic. Margaret River is dominated by its wine reputation, but it’s also a great destination for surfing, with over 70 top surf breaks dotted along the coast. Yallingup Reef has invariably reliable breaks, with the reef creating powerhouse three-metre waves. Incidentally, the shallow lagoon inside the reef is a great spot for snorkelling, and shallow enough to suit the kids. Nearby, off the coastal town of Dunsborough, you can scuba-dive at the wreck of HMAS Swan, one of Australia’s best and most accessible wrecks – snorkellers can even spot it from the ocean surface. The naval destroyer was scuttled in 1997 in 35m of water, and is now home to dozens of varieties of fish, sponges and other marine animals. Families who want to see under the ocean without getting wet, however, should drive 20 minutes eastwards into Busselton and walk along the heritage jetty, which extends its wooden finger 1.8km into Geographe Bay. At its Underwater Observatory, you can descend eight metres beneath the waves and spot dozens of the 5 Senses – Sight PEMBERTON Tune your car radio to 100FM as you arrive in Pemberton, halfway between Albany and Margaret River, and follow a guided tour around the 48km Great Forest Trees Drive, a one-way loop through stunning karri and jarrah forest interspersed with heathland and outcrops of mighty granite boulders. As for Walpole-Nornalup National Park, it’s t he only place in the world you’ll find red tingle trees, many over 400 years old. Don’t miss the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk, which takes you 40m into the tree canopy for a different perspective on tingle-tree forest.
