or even a spot of adventure caving, strictly
not for the claustrophobic.
Margaret River is dominated by its wine
reputation, but it’s also a great destination
for surfing, with over 70 top surf breaks
dotted along the coast. Yallingup Reef has
invariably reliable breaks, with the reef
creating powerhouse three-metre waves.
Incidentally, the shallow lagoon inside the
reef is a great spot for snorkelling, and
shallow enough to suit the kids.
Nearby, off the coastal town of
Dunsborough, you can scuba-dive at
the wreck of HMAS Swan, one of Australia’s
best and most accessible wrecks – snorkellers
can even spot it from the ocean surface.
The naval destroyer was scuttled in 1997
in 35m of water, and is now home to dozens
of varieties of fish, sponges and other marine
animals. Families who want to see under
the ocean without getting wet, however,

PEMBERTON
Tune your car radio to 100FM as you
arrive in Pemberton, halfway between
Albany and Margaret River, and follow
a guided tour around the 48km Great
Forest Trees Drive, a one-way loop
through stunning karri and jarrah
forest interspersed with heathland and
outcrops of mighty granite boulders.
Picnic spots along the way provide a
good excuse to linger, and there are
several walking tracks.

What’s terrific about the southwest
is that it isn’t just about coastal landscapes,
however. Turn inland to find stunning
eucalyptus trees that grow up to 90m
in height and are an icon of this region.
Much original forest has been logged
or cleared for farming, but you’ll find
magnificent jarrah trees around Nannup
and karri trees – among the world’s tallest
hardwoods – between Manjimup and
Denmark. As for Walpole-Nornalup
National Park, it’s t he only place in the
world you’ll find red tingle trees, many over
400 years old. Don’t miss the Valley of the
Giants Tree Top Walk, which takes you
40m into the tree canopy for a different
perspective on tingle-tree forest. What better
escape from the urban jungle than into
a primeval forest?
