Great portraits are never
the work of a single person.
They always require a good
amount of collaboration
between the photographer
and the subject, whether
it is a portrait of a public figure
or the faces of the ‘ordinary’.
Since it is a collaboration,
it is important to always pay
respect to the subject being
photographed. Make them
feel honoured for making their
precious time available to you.
Releasing the shutter is only
a small part of the job; it is the
approach that plays a significant
role in capturing that great
moment. If you are not getting
close enough or the subject is
feeling uncomfortable, it will
show in the photographs. I also
personally avoid taking pictures
if the subject appears unwilling
to be photographed.

Man of Sasando
I met Jeremiah August Paah
at his house-cum-workshop
near Kupang, West Timor.
At that time I was doing
a report on sasando, a traditional
Indonesian musical instrument
originating from Rote Island.
Jeremiah is one of the last
generations of sasando craftsmen
who still actively produce and
play this unique instrument.
After a brief interview and
a cup of coffee, I kindly asked
him to pose for a portrait.
He proudly dressed himself
in his performance outfit. I then
positioned him in front of the
wall of his workshop, which is
built from lontar palm sheaths,
illuminated by the available
outdoor light: an effective
combination.
Pertama kali saya mengenal
Jeremiah August Pah adalah
saat berada di rumah bengkel
miliknya, dekat Kota Kupang,
Nusa Tenggara Timur. Saat itu
saya sedang mengulas tentang
sasando, alat musik tradisional
Pulau Rote. Jeremiah adalah
satu dari sekian pengrajin
sasando yang masih aktif
memproduksi dan memainkan
instrumen unik ini. Setelah
wawancara singkat dan
menyesap kopi, saya pun
memintanya berpose.
Dalam kostum panggung yang
dikenakannya, saya memintanya
berdiri di depan dinding bengkel
yang terbuat dari pelepah pohon
lontar yang tertimpa cahaya
mentari; sebuah kombinasi
yang cantik.
Potret yang bagus bukan hanya
hasil kerja satu orang saja, tetapi
membutuhkan kerja sama yang
baik antara fotografer dan objek
yang difotonya baik itu tokoh
masyarakat maupun orang biasa.
Karena membutuhkan kerja
sama, menghargai objek foto
adalah hal yang penting. Buatlah
mereka merasa dihargai karena
telah bersedia menyisihkan
waktunya untuk Anda. Melepas
rana kamera hanyalah bagian
kecil dari fotografi portrait; justru
pendekatanlah yang memainkan
peran penting dalam menangkap
sebuah momen besar. Jika
hubungan Anda tidak cukup
dekat atau sang objek merasa
tidak nyaman saat difoto, hal itu
bisa tertangkap oleh kamera.
Secara pribadi saya juga berusaha
untuk tidak memotret jika si
objek foto tampak tak ingin
diambil gambarnya.
