Paddle through
the Finish Line
Bright sunshine covers the surface
of Musi River with millions of sparkling
diamonds of light. The hue of the upper
atmosphere as seen from the mighty
river lies between green and indigo. The
weather is nice and perfect for a day out.
Colourful boats are laid out on a dock,
waiting for the paddlers. Welcome to the
annual Musi Triboatton.
Held from November 23 through
November 30 with “Sport, Challenge
and Tourism” as its theme, Musi
Triboatton 2014 marks the third time
since it began in 2012. Organised by
Ministry of Tourism and Creative
Economy of the Republic of Indonesia
in collaboration with Indonesia
National Rowing Association (PODSI),
one of the objectives of this event is to
raise the awareness among local and
international travellers of tourism in
South Sumatra Province. Although
it emphasises on the endeavour
to promote the importance of the
environment, Musi Triboatton 2014
is expected to help develop microeconomic activities and open more
employment opportunities, especially
along the banks of Musi River.
With Indonesia as the host, the
participants are expected to come from
10 to 15 countries this year. There will be
teams consisting of 12 athletes and three
officials able to compete in three different
events: rafting, canoeing and dragon
boating. These challenging recreational
activities start from Tanjung Raya Village
in Pendopo District, Empat Lawang
Regency. Participants will row through
three other districts and one city
called Musi Rawas, Musi Banyuasin,
Banyuasin and Palembang respectively.
Naturally, the iconic Ampera Bridge in
the centre of Palembang is designated
as the finish point.
By integrating natural and cultural
tourism aspects in this competition, the
annual triboatton aims to provide greater
exposure opportunities to tourism in
South Sumatra Province. While fostering
positive characters through competition
and exploration, participants will also
be able to enjoy the beauty of the
sceneries surrounding Musi River. As
they paddle through different districts,
they will get to see how local people
live and preserve their culture.
Even though it has only been
the third year, the organiser of Musi
Triboatton is thoroughly prepared to
handle the event. Some motherships
modelled after a large boat commonly
used by locals to transport people and
goods will be available on certain spots.
These motherships will provide the
participating teams with facilities, such
as mobile accommodation, toilet and
kitchen. Safety and Rescue Team will
be standing by with the support of first
aid and ambulance teams, ensuring the
safety of all the participants.
Musi Triboatton 2014 starts on
November 23 with the arrival and
registration of participants. Opening
ceremony will be held the next day,
followed by location orientation,
safety and rescue training as well as
technical meeting. The next five days
will be dedicated to five different stages
respectively. A closing ceremony will
be held on November 29, where the
winners will be awarded with medals,
certificates, and cash prizes.
If you and your friends are skilled
rowers, you might not want to miss the
opportunity to experience the wonder
of South Sumatra.
