118 Travel | Tokyo 5 Senses – Sight OLD STREET, FRESH BITES Nakamise-dōri is often branded as one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan; traders have been peddling temple goods, souvenirs and omiyage (gifts for friends) on this processional approach to Sensō-ji Temple for perhaps 400 years. It’s also a good spot for an energising snack. At the northern end, Asakusa-kokonoe makes delicious melt-in-the-mouth age-manjū (filled fritters), while hungry shoppers can watch ningyō-yaki (moulded kasutera sponge cakes) being baked at Kame-Ya (midway). The busy crossroads of Nakamise-dōri and Shinnakamise-dōri. Asakusa-kokonoe seems ever busy. Making ningyō-yaki at Kame-Ya. Taking a bite out of an age-manjū from Asakusa-kokonoe. Ningyō-yaki Age-manjū Ningyō-yaki is a small snack cake made by cooking a batter of flour, eggs and sugar in an iron mould. They are sold both with and without anko (sweet bean paste) in traditional shapes of shichifukujin (seven gods of good luck) or the Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate and giant chōchin (lantern). The ones in the shapes of characters from kids’ TV shows are also gaining popularity. Age-manjū is a lightly battered and fried variation of a flour bun usually filled with azuki (red bean filling). When it’s fried, the outside is crispy hot and the inside melts in your mouth. Rather than just selling the traditional age-manjū with red bean paste filling, shops along the Nakamise-dōri sell age-manjū with unique flavour fillings, such as pumpkin, sweet green tea, and custard.
