Habel Edon
Edon Sasando
The late Arnoldus Edon was a
physics teacher and sasando
enthusiast who decided to improve
upon the design at the request of
sasando musicians. He eventually
created the first electric sasando
that replaced the palm leaf
resonator with an active speaker.
The sasando is a traditional string
instrument from Rote Island in East
Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Harp-like, the
instrument comprises strings that span
the length of a bamboo tube which serves
as the frame of the instrument, and is
surrounded by dried palm leaves that
function as a resonator. The late Arnoldus
Edon was a physics teacher and sasando
enthusiast who decided to improve upon
the design at the request of sasando
musicians. He eventually created the first
electric sasando that replaced the palm
leaf resonator with an active speaker.
Arnoldus Edon’s life work lives on in
his son, Caro David Habel Edon, who
trained for decades under him and
continued his legacy of refining the
sasando. Habel Edon’s new designs
incorporate teak wood, mahogany,
redwood or sandalwood in varying
shapes and sizes to achieve different
sounds. “I differentiate my works
from those of other crafters by making
thoughtful changes to the design, such
as tweaking the size of the frame,
adjusting the distance between strings
or even adding strings to increase the
range. Like my father, I try to create
instruments that are in tune with
musicians,” explained Habel Edon.
Wilkhahn has devoted decades
to developing office chairs that
encourage our natural desire to keep
our bodies moving and healthy. Chairs
that are exceptional for their ease of
use and superb design.
After five years' development,

Alat musik tradisional dari Nusa
Tenggara Timur, sasando biasanya tampil
bersama daun lontar (Haik) sebagai
penghantar resonansi audio. Dengan
sentuhan tangan dari Caro David Habel
Edon, terciptalah sasando elektrik dengan
pengeras suara aktif pengganti daun
lontar tanpa meninggalkan bentuk
aslinya. Menggunakan bahan dari kayu
Jati, Mahoni, kayu Merah atau kayu
Cendana, satu buah sasando bisa dibuat
dalam waktu 4 minggu.
Sasando elektrik tersebut pertama kali
diciptakan oleh almarhum Arnoldus Edon,
seorang guru fisika yang juga ayah dari
Habel Edon, pada tahun 1958. Kini Habel
Edon meneruskan pembuatan alat musik
tersebut dengan desain khas hasil
karyanya sendiri. “Pada saat saya membuat
sasando, biasanya inspirasi itu keluar
dengan sendirinya. Bila saya merasa ada
yang perlu diubah atau diperbaiki dengan
desain yang lebih menarik, saya langsung
menggambarnya dengan perbandingan
skala untuk menghasilkan desain yang
lebih sempurna, misalnya dalam ukuran
bambu, jarak dawai dan sebagainya.
Dengan demikian, model atau bentuk
sasando buatan saya tidak sama dengan
bentuk sasando buatan pengrajin yang
lainnya,” papar Hebel Edon.
