Turtle/Turquoise
This kind of photograph invites
the imagination to perceive meaning.
However, the imagination doesn’t
have to accept the meaning delivered
by the author to the viewer. I wasn’t
going to name this piece ‘Turtle’,
because it felt like limiting the
imagination of the viewer. But without
dictating, I wanted the viewer to seek
out the turtle in the dominating
turquoise. Samsung NX 300, Macro
lens 60mm, F2.8.
Dalam jenis foto ini,
imajinasi diperlukan untuk
menterjemahkan makna. Tapi
imajinasi tidak pernah dipaksakan
untuk menyamakan makna yang
disampaikan oleh pembuatnya kepada
penontonnya. Tadinya saya tidak ingin
memberi nama Turtle pada karya ini,
seperti mendikte bentuk hingga
imajinasi liar para penikmat menjadi
terbatas. Tapi diluar dari maksud
mendikte, mungkin saya
menginginkan penonton untuk
mencari Turtle diantara warna
Turquoise yang mendominasi.

Top Tips
Many have asked me what are the subjects
of my abstract photography. When I tell them
shipping containers, shipwrecks, asphalt and
scrap metal, the response is often a confused
look. Indeed these are photographs of rusty,
scratched, corroded metals, old asphalt, mud
and even scrap metal left on the side of the
road. I like to think of it as capturing a story.
Banyak yang bertanya asal muasal dari foto-foto
saya. Ketika menyebutkan konteiner, bangkai kapal
dan besi tua, saya selalu memperoleh kerutan di dahi
sebagai respon balik. Iya, ini semua adalah goresan
karat, luka akibat gesekan dengan besi lain, cipratan
aspal, lumpur dan bahkan besi tua yang teronggok
dipinggir jalan. Untuk itu saya lebih senang disebut
sebagai penangkap cerita.
No two scratches or pieces of scrap metal
are the same. They were shaped by time
and nature, and I make it a point to not meddle
in the creation of the story; only to capture it.
New stories are made as shipping containers and
scrap metal move around the world from port
to port. Finding new stories and capturing them
feels a lot like putting together a storybook.
seluruh dunia. Menemukan itu semua sama halnya
seperti menemukan buku cerita baru.
Humans see the sun and the galaxy in the
large scale, not realising that there are much
larger things out there. Likewise, we see cells,
molecules and atoms in the small scale, even
though there are other tinier things that exist.
When we think about that, it is easy to see
that we are not the centre of the universe,
because there is the ‘infinite’, which shifts
the centre of everything. When the object in a
large photograph is actually the size of a match,
this becomes the centre and the viewer will
automatically shrink into the scale of matches.
Manusia melihat matahari dan galaksi dalam
skala yg besar, lupa jika masih ada yang jauh lebih
besar. Begitu pula dengan sel, molekul dan atom,
kenyataanya masih ada yang lebih kecil lagi. Lalu
pernyataan umum ‘we are the centre of the universe’
menjadi absurd karena masih ada ‘tak terhingga’
yang membuat skala apapun akan memiliki titik
tengah yang berbeda. Ketika obyek dengan ukuran
asli sebesar korek api menjadi titik tengah, maka
para pengunjung tanpa sadar akan turut mengecil
dalam skala korek api walaupun karya ini sudah
berukuran dua meter.
