THE SCENT OF
NOSTALGIA
There’s a delightful scent of nostalgia
in the antiques market that lies in the
centre of Semarang’s appropriately named
Kota Lama (Old Town). The most obvious
stalls line one side of the small park next
to Blenduk Church, but one block east
from here (just the other side of Spiegel)
there is a car park full of little Aladdin’s
caves selling everything from Dutch-era
furniture to Javanese woodwork to
German gramophones.

di pasar antik yang terletak di pusat Kota
Semarang tepatnya bernama Kota Lama.
Kios-kios yang paling jelas terlihat berbaris
pada satu sisi taman kecil di sebelah Gereja
Blenduk, tapi satu blok ke timur dari sini
(di sisi lain Spiegel) ada tempat parkir
penuh dengan Gua Aladdin kecil yang
menjual segala sesuatu mulai dari furnitur
era Belanda hingga perabot kayu Jawa
sampai gramofon Jerman.

Getting around
Taxis are safe and comfortable, and reasonably
priced – but you have to stay alert. Make sure
you understand the route or ask a friend.

The city’s weather is hot and humid, so wear
light-coloured cotton clothes. You do not need a

trousers will be comfortable.

food stores called ‘toko oleh-oleh’ (a lot are
located in a street called Jalan Pandanaran) or
from street vendors/open stalls.
