Ice Age, Greenland
A gull is dwarfed by a massive iceberg
in the Ilulissat Icefjord, Greenland. The
Ilulissat Icefjord has enormous icebergs
from the most productive glacier in the
northern hemisphere. The glacier flows
at a rate of 20–35m (66–115ft) per day,
resulting in around 20 billion tonnes of
icebergs being calved off and passing out
of the fjord every year. This was
photographed from a small boat.

I was in a zodiac heading towards a beach
filled with tonnes of walrus when I spotted a
polar bear in the distance. That’s a good
reason to not go ashore, so I stayed in the
zodiac to see where it would go. It walked
straight to the walrus, which gave them a
good fright. This was just an opportunistic
action from the bear, because normally they
would not be able to kill a walrus.
Saat menaiki perahu karet menuju
pantai yang dipenuhi walrus, saya melihat
seekor beruang kutub di kejauhan. Saya pun
mengurungkan niat untuk mendarat, dan
tetap berada di perahu untuk melihat ke
mana sang beruang pergi. Beruang itu
bergerak mendekati kawanan walrus dan
membuat mereka ketakutan. Namun yang
dilakukannya hanya sebatas menggertak,
karena beruang kutub tidak akan mampu
mengalahkan walrus.
