The Barne Glacier
The Barne Glacier ends in a sheer wall of
ice where it meets the ocean. The ice
originates 3,000m above on the flanks of Mt
Erebus, which is Antarctica’s most active
volcano. For nine months a year it is left to
continue its slow forward movement,
pushing the frozen ocean out of its way. In
the summer, when the sea ice breaks up, this
wall is battered by the waves continuously for
three months, carving it into a massive
jagged wall of ice.

The constant movement of glacial
ice creates crevasses that are covered over
by blowing snow. In some areas where
the glaciers meet the ocean, the crevasses
flood with water that then freezes to form
caves that can be explored safely. If I hadn’t
seen these caves for myself, I wouldn’t
believe that there are places this
beautiful on the planet.
