Alasdair Turner
A photographer based in Seattle , USA , Alasdair Turner has an affinity for shooting the most remote and inhospitable parts of our planet , from high mountains to the polar regions . An image from his project was included as a finalist in New Zealand Geographic ’ s photographer of the year . His work has appeared in numerous publications , from Wired to Seattle Magazine , and has been shown at The Annenberg Space for Photography . Ross Island and the Ross Sea Region is a project that was born from five visits to Antarctica over a five-year period and a total of more than 19 months living and working on the continent .
It was my goal not just to show the stunning beauty of this rarely visited part of the Earth but to show its barren , remote and inhospitable nature . While most photographers spend time in the icy seas surrounding the continent , this project was focused on the continental areas beyond the seas where ice and its twisted and broken forms are often the only thing there is . On much of this continent there is no life of any kind and humans are aliens on our own planet .
Weddell Seal – McMurdo Sound , Antarctica
Ross Island dan Ross Sea Region adalah sebuah proyek yang terlahir dari lima kali kunjungan saya ke Antartika dalam kurun waktu lebih dari lima tahun dengan total masa tinggal dan bekerja lebih dari 19 bulan di benua tersebut .
Tujuan saya selain ingin menunjukkan keindahan bagian bumi yang jarang dikunjungi ini , juga untuk memperlihatkan alamnyanya yang tandus , terpencil dan tidak ramah . Banyak fotografer menghabiskan waktu di area laut dingin di sekitar benua , namun proyek ini justru berfokus pada area di luar laut di mana es dan pecahannya menjadi satu-satunya yang bisa ditemui di sini . Di sebagian besar benua ini tidak ada kehidupan dan manusia adalah makhluk asing di planetnya sendiri .
Fotografer yang berdomisili di Seattle , AS , Alasdair Turner memiliki ketertarikan untuk memotret bagian-bagian terpencil dan penuh rintangan yang berada di belahan bumi ini , mulai dari pegunungan hingga wilayah kutub . Weddell seals live year-round beneath the ice of McMurdo Sound . They must surface every 20 minutes to breathe . It took many attempts to shoot an image that captured the feel of seeing these amazing animals drift up from the dark ocean below . Due to the darkness , this image had to be lit artificially using lights shining through the ice into the water .
Anjing laut Weddell hidup di area bawah es McMurdo Sound sepanjang tahun . Setiap 20 menit sekali mereka naik ke permukaan untuk bernapas .
