Mr Jeremias Pah, maestro
sasando, singing his Bolelebo song.
The sasando strings are
stretched across the tube from
top to bottom.
After seeing and experiencing so much, I became aware that
the ‘Coral City’ has promising prospects in tourism. People can
visit the highlands to feel the nature of Timor first, before
returning to the lower-altitude urban areas to relax...
The best part of the island, which is known
for the sasando musical instrument and the ti’i
wide-brimmed hat, is its coast on the western
side, which is popular with surfers. Surfing is one
of the main reasons tourists come to Rote,
and fishing villages like Nemberala have
been transformed into a paradise for
lovers of rolling waves.
Nemberala offers varying waves, and the surfers
choose where to go based on their preference,
rather than gathering in a single area. Besialu
(T-Land) is the location of a legendary wave, and
is referred to as the pioneer of surfing activities
in Nemberala. This is followed by Sakunamon,
which must be visited by sampan boat because
the waves are quite far from the shore. Then
there is The Bombie with its fast-flowing sea.
Beginner surfers can be seen playing in the
waves at Squealers, which is safer and more
fun. As I am no surfer, I was content to watch
from the beach, including at Bo’a where
the beach vista is fantastic.

an ideal host with multiple destinations.
5 Senses – Sound
SASANDO
A harp-like musical instrument
with strings that are plucked and
a sound a bit like a kecapi, the sasando,
from Rote, is made from woven
lontar leaves that act as a resonator.
In Kupang you can find a sasando
workshop at Oebelo, where
the leader is the sasando maestro,
Jeremias Pah.
Sebuah alat musik dawai yang
dimainkan dengan dipetik dan
menghasilkan suara agak mirip
kecapi. Sasando berasal dari Rote,
dan komponen alat musik ini terbuat
dari anyaman lontar yang berfungsi
sebagai wadah resonansi. Di Kupang,
kelas pelatihan sasando dapat
dijumpai di Oebelo, empunya
maestro sasando, Jeremias Pah.
