Infrared Photography
I love infrared photography for its distinct
and intriguing colour quality. To capture infrared
(IR) images you’ll need a digital camera that’s been
modified, which I did in 2006, after much
research. Armed with my newly modified IR DSLR,
I explored the aesthetic possibilities of this kind
of photography and ended up starting an IR
photography community, MyINFRARED.
Saya menyukai fotografi inframerah karena kualitas
warnanya yang tajam dan menarik. Untuk mengabadikan
gambar inframerah (IR), Anda memerlukan sebuah
kamera digital yang dimodifikasi. Dengan kamera IR
DSLR yang telah dimodifikasi, saya mengeksplorasi
semua kemungkinan artistik pada cabang fotografi ini
dan akhirnya mendirikan sebuah komunitas fotografi
IR, MyINFRARED.
How to get started? It’s actually not that complicated.
A modified IR DSLR shoots almost the same as a
regular DSLR. The difference is a modified IR DSLR
covers its hot mirror with specific filters to achieve
varying results. Usually the photographer will use
an IR camera as a secondary camera so they can shoot
with regular light and in IR. The end result is often
alluring and abstract in colour quality. If you can find
your own unique aesthetic style in IR photography,
soon enough you’ll gain your very own following.
Bagaimana memulainya? Sebenarnya tidak terlalu
rumit. Kamera IR DSLR yang dimodifikasi memotret
sama seperti DSLR biasa. Bedanya, hot mirror pada
IR DSLR dilapisi oleh filter-filter khusus untuk
mendapatkan hasil yang berbeda. Biasanya, fotografer
akan menggunakan kamera IR sebagai kamera kedua
sehingga mereka bisa memotret dengan cahaya biasa
dan dalam IR. Jika Anda bisa menemukan gaya
estetika Anda sendiri dalam fotografi IR, Anda akan
mendapatkan banyak pengikut.

I did very little post-production to this IR image. It’s
hard to tell, but this was actually taken on the beach in
the 5-star resort district of Nusa Dua, Bali. I wasn’t out
to photograph anything in particular. I was just strolling
along the beach when these striking trees caught my
eye. The sunset created this captivating silhouette of
the trees, the bicycle and the couple. They left a few
minutes later and the moment was gone. I learned an
important lesson that day: always bring your camera!
Cahaya
senja mampu menciptakan siluet pepohonan, sepeda
dan orang. Namun momen tersebut tak berlangsung
lama, hanya dalam hitungan menit semua keindahan
itu hilang. Ada pelajaran berharga yang saya dapatkan
saat itu: jangan lupa membawa kamera!
