A personal
approach

photo series.
Since 2000, I have been travelling to various
places around the planet, ranging from coastal
regions to mountains and the tropics, and even
barren deserts, in order to document the lives
of indigenous communities. Through
photography, I try to raise awareness of the
importance of preserving cultural diversity. Sejak tahun 2000, saya mendatangi berbagai
tempat di seluruh dunia, dari pantai sampai
pegunungan dan daerah tropis, bahkan gurun
tandus, untuk mendokumentasikan kehidupan
masyarakat adat. Lewat fotografi, saya ingin
membangun kesadaran akan pentingnya
melestarikan keanekaragaman budaya.

There have been considerable challenges:
difficulty gaining access to some places,
and poor infrastructure and government
policies in some parts of the world. Pendekatan personal dan komunikasi yang baik
sangat penting dalam pembuatan seri foto ini.
Ada beberapa hal yang menjadi tantangan besar,
seperti sulitnya akses ke beberapa tempat,

The ‘Treasure of Humanity’ photo series
celebrates the highest of human values:
diversity in identities and efforts to unite
in the name of humanity. Seri foto “Treasure of Humanity” (Khazanah Umat
Manusia) mengangkat nilai-nilai kemanusiaan
tertinggi, yakni keanekaragaman identitas, dan
upaya-upaya untuk bersatu atas nama kemanusiaan.
The Next Generation of the Mursi People, Ethiopia
I met this girl last year, and she drew my attention more than
the other Mursi girls. When reaching the age of 15 or 16, girls
will normally wear dhebi a tugoin, a ‘lip saucer’ plate made of
clay that is inserted into a pierced hole in the lower lip.
However, nowadays, Mursi women are given freedom
to decide whether to wear the dhebi a tugoin.
Saya bertemu gadis ini tahun lalu. Dia yang paling menarik
perhatian saya di antara dari gadis-gadis Mursi lainnya. Setelah
mencapai usia 15 atau 16 tahun, anak perempuan Mursi akan memakai
dhebi a tugoin, ‘piring bibir’ dari tanah liat yang dimasukkan ke bibir
bawah yang sudah dilubangi. Namun, dewasa ini, wanita Mursi bebas
memutuskan apakah akan memakai dhebi a tugoin atau tidak.
