Normally this is the family reunion dinner, especially for those with a family member living away from home. In this dinner, fish will normally be served, while dumplings are the most important dish in northern china. These two dishes symbolise prosperity. Other dishes are according to personal preference. The majority of Chinese will have New Year’s Eve dinner at home rather than in a restaurant. 5 Senses – Taste NEW YEAR FOOD Makan bersama di malam Tahun Baru merupakan momen penting karena merupakan momen berkumpulnya seluruh anggota keluarga, terutama mereka yang tinggalnya berjauhan. Kebanyakan masyarakat China merayakan malam Tahun Baru di rumah daripada di restoran. How to Make Dumplings The food served during the Spring Festival is rich in symbolism. Black seaweed and red dates (prosperity), abalone (abundance), oysters (success in business), lotus seeds (fertility) and noodles (longevity) are all favoured. These associations are often related to the names of the ingredients. Red dates, for example, are considered auspicious not only for their lucky colour but because their Chinese name, hong zao, also sounds like the phrase ‘prosperity comes soon’.
