84 Explore | Interview INTERVIEW JAY SUBYAKTO CREATIVE IDENTITY Interview by Anais Budiman Photography by Hendra Wiradi Wahab A prominent Indonesian artistic director with a degree in architecture, Jay Subyakto is a visual artist whose canvas extends across many different mediums. With a creative identity strongly rooted in his Indonesian heritage, he is constantly driven to create something new. Colours caught up with Jay Subyakto for an exclusive interview at his home in South Jakarta. He was taking a well-deserved break to recharge and explore new ideas after having completed his duties in helping to artistically direct two massive concerts last November: Konser Satu Indonesia – Salute to Guruh Soekarno Putra and Magenta Orchestra X (the first being a patriotic unity concert for the country and the second being the decadal performance of Indonesia’s modern pop orchestra Magenta Orchestra). Jay Subyakto is highly regarded for his talents as the art director of many live arts performances and concerts, as a music video director, producer and photographer. He believes that continuously pursuing artistic passions wherever they might take you, even into different mediums, helps to fuel a steady stream of inspiration. “For me, the danger of staying in one spot creatively for too long is that you get stuck and begin to repeat the same ideas.
