This month’s Sundowner location was the political
and administrative capital of the first Kingdom of Siam
in the 13th and 15th centuries. The city, whose name
means ‘the dawn of happiness’, was the birthplace of
Thai art, architecture and language. Now a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, it houses a vast number of
historical sites and temple ruins. The central zone –
the most visited – is the site of the royal palace (now
collapsed) and the spiritual centre.
