152 Advertorial SOD UPH: PREPARING FUTURE DESIGN PROFESSIONALS The rapid expansion of design disciplines in Indonesia, such as architecture and interior, visual communication and product design, has initiated a variety of design-related industries and opened up a greater need for talented design professionals. The School of Design (SoD) at Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH) is a gateway to design learning and prepares you to be part of this rapidly growing field. In its strategy to differentiate itself from other institutions, SoD has positioned itself as a supplier of not merely skilled workers, but also of future designers with the ability to expand and develop future interdisciplinary specialities in various design-related professions. Its curriculum approach is developed with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary studies, where various disciplinary correlations, in theories, praxis and technology, are joined in each subject to emphasise maturity of concepts and processes, not merely the end result. Students are conditioned to be able to think and analyse each design decision critically and in depth. Students are equipped with a wide range of choices in technology and materiality, empowering them with the freedom to tackle a problem through various approaches to achieve their final design goal. “The strength of SoD UPH is the emphasis on lifelong development of design ability that continues to evolve. By conditioning our students this way, we hope that our graduates may develop themselves beyond the constraints of what is available in the industry today, having the ability to go beyond defined career slots and build upon their ever-growing niche in design,” says Elya Wibowo, Dean of SoD. SoD lecturers prepare their students with the ability to create interdisciplinary dialogue between design and related fields of study through liberal arts as a common ground. SoD UPH graduates should be able not only to draw, but to draw to the extent that drawing becomes a means of inquiry, with reasoning behind each dot and line, and to be able to communicate their ideas to appropriate audiences. To survive in such a dynamic future, students should strive to become decision makers or discerning leaders in their field. SoD consists of four different departments: Architecture, Interior, Visual Communication (specialising in graphics, animation and cinematography) and Product Design. SoD UPH students are conditioned to critically build an understanding of how these separate design disciplines may bring their perspectives together for common goals in society. With its state-of-the-art facilities and leading workshops, SoD intends to orient its students to sharpen their conceptual arguments through industry practices and testing. “The strength of SoD UPH is the emphasis on lifelong development of design ability that continues to evolve.
