Aerial photography is imagery captured from above the planet ’ s surface . Usually it ’ s from satellites and space stations in orbit hundreds of kilometres above the Earth , or from aircraft within our atmosphere at less than 18,000m .
Aircraft can be manned or unmanned , fixed or rotary wing , airships , balloons , gliders or kites . We can also take aerial or aerial-like images from mountains , a wide variety of man-made structures , or even bamboo or telescopic poles .
Cameras can be hand-held or mounted , remotely or automatically controlled . Lenses can be pointed in any direction , but they are usually looking down vertically , obliquely or horizontally , or in several overlapping directions , or positions , to be stitched together afterwards .
Aerial photos are records of solar energy reflected off the Earth ’ s surface and atmosphere . At high altitudes infrared films and sensors are often used as these can penetrate atmospheric haze . To penetrate clouds or forests there are other methods that send down radio waves or laser pulses to record the terrain hidden below .
Three types of aerial photography Aerial survey , remote sensing or mapping : often uses photogrammetry to record vertical imagery with geo-referenced points , providing accurate environmental data . This can be used directly as images , or processed into maps and geographic information systems for the public , institutions , industries and governments , and , it is vital for so many of our daily activities .
Oblique aerial photography : the artistic or aesthetic type of aerial photography . Lenses look in any direction and usually without the geo-referenced accuracy required for surveys . Artistic aerials are used to illustrate all kinds of publications and media , including movies or fine art prints .
