CELEBRATE CULTURAL DIVERSITY
TO BE THE BEST FOR THE WORLD
As the largest school in
Indonesia and one of
the country’s first private
schools to offer an international
curriculum, Jakarta
Intercultural School (JIS)
in South Jakarta holds an
annual JIS Cultural Week to
introduce world culture
to its students, who come
from over 65 countries.
Wayang has been listed by UNESCO
as one of its Masterpieces of the Oral
and Intangible Heritage of Humanity
since 2003.
To celebrate World Wayang Day, JIS invited
world-renowned puppeteer Ki Purbo Asmoro
to hold a wayang show in November for the
annual event, during which its students not
only watched, but also operated the puppets
and played the gamelan.
A series of workshops on culture
were also held by the artist and
JIS teachers for the students during
the Cultural Week.
the school offers four programmes, ranging
from early childhood, elementary school
and middle school to high school.
At the school, teachers, who are mostly
from North America, Canada, Australia
and the United Kingdom, train students to
think critically with an inquisitive mindset
through problem-learning projects – a skill
that students must have and implement in
real life.
JIS believes that shadow puppetry or
wayang is the masterpiece of Indonesian
cultural heritage because it contains
important life philosophies for its students,
such as honesty and loyalty to goodness and
truth – principles that have been instilled by
this school in its students to date.
Having more than 2,300 multicultural
students, JIS has included culture in its
inquiry-based curriculum as one of its
instruments to shape them to be the best
for the world since its establishment in 1951.
With an inquiry-based learning approach,
a characteristic of Western-style education,
Through technological advancement,
JIS has also allowed its students and their
counterparts overseas to make connections
as global citizens. Together, they are ready
to change the world and make
it a better place.
