King’s Day, Amsterdam, April 27
Held every year on April 27, King’s Day
(formerly Queen’s Day) is renowned for
being one of the biggest and most colourful
festivals in the Netherlands, and especially
so in Amsterdam. King’s Day festivities
invite both locals and visitors to soak up
Amsterdam’s open-air fun. In the streets,
canals and parks, and everywhere in
between, Amsterdammers enjoy the biggest
street party of the year. Visitors are treated
to a sea of orange as everyone is covered
head to toe in the colour oranje as a show of
pride for the Dutch royal family, the House
of Orange-Nassau. Every year, the royal
entourage visits a town or municipality in
the Netherlands as part of the celebrations.
The fun traditionally begins on the eve of the
big day (King’s Night), with the carnival
atmosphere continuing throughout the city
on King’s Day. DJs play at parties in public
squares, brightly decorated boats fill canals
and live music spills onto streets from café
patios. Aside from children being able to try
their hand at trading on King’s Day, there are
plenty more activities taking place across the
city for the young and young at heart,
including face-painting, games and

sebagai salah satu perayaan terbesar dan paling
meriah di Belanda, terutama di Amsterdam.
Perayaan King’s Day (dahulu dikenal dengan
Queen’s Day) mengajak penduduk lokal dan
wisatawan untuk larut dalam keriaan di udara
terbuka. Jalan-jalan, kanal, taman dan setiap
tempat dipadati orang-orang yang menikmati
pesta rakyat ini. Lautan warna oranye akan
tampak selama perayaan dan orang-orang
mengenakan atribut berwarna tersebut,
mulai dari kepala hingga kaki, sebagai wujud
kebanggaan akan keluarga kerajaan, House
of Orange-Nassau. Dalam perayaan ini,
rombongan anggota kerajaan akan mengunjungi
salah satu kota atau daerah administratif di
Belanda. Keriaan berlangsung mulai malam
menjelang perayaan (disebut King’s Night)
hingga pada keesokan harinya. Di hari King’s
Day, taman-taman kota akan dipenuhi aksi
para DJ, sementara kanal-kanal semarak
dengan perahu hias dan live-music terdengar
ingar bingar mulai dari jalanan kota hingga
teras kafe. Selain dapat dinikmati oleh
anak-anak, ada beragam kegiatan yang
tersebar di penjuru kota bagi mereka yang
muda dan berjiwa muda, seperti melukis
wajah serta acara permainan dan olahraga.
