Surface: Wave Photography
Ben Thouard
After being raised
in France, where his
passion for waves and
photography started,
Ben Thouard travelled
the world in search of
what would inspire
him in photography.
He discovered Tahiti
10 years ago and settled
down at the end of the
road in front of the
famous wave Teahupo’o.
Wave photography
became his obsession and
a huge personal project
that will come to life
through the release of his
book in May this year.

The ocean is my source of inspiration and creativity.
Being in the water from a young age, I developed an
obsession for waves. This is what took me to the end
of the road on the island of Tahiti, in the middle
of the South Pacific Ocean.
Tahiti has some of the clearest water in the world.
It is also home to one of the heaviest waves in
the world, called Teahupo’o. Besides photographing
surfing, I explored new ways of shooting this unique
and unreal place. This concept is the result of years
of exploration, development and work. The Surface
project became an obsession. This line between
two worlds gets shaped, translating the energy
of the ocean, and it became my biggest source
of inspiration.
Laut adalah sumber inspirasi dan kreativitas saya.
Sejak mengenal laut di usia muda, saya terobsesi pada
ombak. Inilah yang membawa saya ke ujung Pulau
Tahiti, di tengah Samudra Pasifik Selatan.
Tak hanya memiliki air laut paling jernih di dunia, tempat
ini juga memiliki salah satu ombak terbesar di jagat raya,
yang disebut Teahupo’o. Selain memotret peselancar, saya
juga mengeksplorasi cara baru untuk memotret tempat
unik dan menakjubkan ini. Konsep ini merupakan hasil
eksplorasi, pengembangan dan kerja bertahun-tahun.
Proyek buku Surface adalah obsesi saya. Garis permukaan
yang memisahkan dua dunia ini menggambarkan
energi laut dan menjadi sumber inspirasi terbesar saya.
Animal
Here again the ocean expresses herself.
This wave is breaking in the middle of nowhere,
and the storm approaching in the background made
this moment very unique. I felt like a wild animal was
surging out of the water.
Di foto ini juga terlihat laut mengekspresikan
dirinya. Ombak yang memecah entah di mana dan
badai yang mendekat di belakang membuat momen
ini sangat unik. Saya merasa seperti ada binatang
buas yang sedang keluar dari dalam air.
