GARUDA INDONESIA ’ S UNIFORM HISTORY THROUGH THE AGES

Since 1949 , Garuda Indonesia ’ s cabin crew uniforms have changed several times – updated to suit changes to the company ’ s logo , aircraft livery and cabin interior , as well as to reflect the company ’ s image .
The cabin crew uniform worn between 1949 and the 1960s was simple and functional . The original uniform was designed in an era of development post-independence for the Republic of Indonesia .
In the 1970s , the cabin crew uniform was updated to look more fashionable . Hanae Mori , a renowned Japanese designer at the time , designed the uniform as a mini sack dress , with beige on top and orange on the bottom . The uniform was topped off with an orange hat .
A unique Indonesian touch was introduced to the cabin crew uniforms in the 1980s , with a quaint brocade kebaya for senior female cabin crew . The kebaya came in orange , deep blue and dark green , and was matched with a traditional brown batik long skirt .
Also in the 1980s , junior female cabin crew wore orange or beige sack dresses , matched with a batik silk scarf : orange scarves with brown accents were matched with orange sack dresses , and brown batik scarves with beige accents were matched with beige sack dresses . The uniform was completed by a short jacket and belt in the same colour as the sack dress , and an orange hat .
In the years that followed , Garuda Indonesia maintained a strong Indonesian element in the uniforms of its female cabin crew : for example , the tenun weaving pattern used on the blouse and scarf worn as a transitional uniform in 1985 . Entering the 1990s , a blue tenun weaving pattern , designed by local designer Prayudi , was introduced to the uniforms of the female cabin crew . In 1999 , their uniform used the ‘ Argopuro ’ motif in tosca and dark blue , which was designed by Iwan Tirta .
In line with the Corporate Identity ( Brand ) Refresh programme , in 2010 Garuda Indonesia introduced a new uniform for male and female
cabin crew . The female uniform consisted of a plain kebaya matched with a batik sarong featuring the ‘ Lereng Garuda Indonesia ’ motif in matching colours . The ‘ Lereng Garuda Indonesia ’ motif , inspired by the ‘ Parang Gondosuli ’ batik pattern , was designed by Josephine Werratie Komara ( Obin ).
The uniform is available in four different colours : deep blue for Flight Service Managers ( FSM ), tosca and orange for senior and junior cabin crew , and lilac for Maître d ’ Cabin , which was introduced in 2013 . Meanwhile , the uniforms for male cabin crew were updated to a grey single-breasted suit with matching slacks .
In flights that implement the ‘ New Service Concept ’ since 2013 , the cabin crew includes a Chef in the First Class cabin and a Manager Cuisine in the Business Class cabin .
In November 2013 , Garuda Indonesia officially began operation of its ATR 72-600 fleet , which was introduced as the Garuda Indonesia sub-brand ‘ Explore ’, flying to remote areas around the archipelago . To accommodate mobility in the slender aircraft , a new , specially designed cabin crew uniform was introduced for ATR aircraft . This uniform is also worn by cabin crew on the Bombardier CRJ1000 NextGen aircraft , through the sub-brand ‘ Explore Jet ’.
