day water will be provided to Tamil Nadu . The Supreme Court on October 18 , had directed the Karnataka government to keep releasing 2,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu till further orders . River Cauvery has been in the epicenter of agitation and violence in the States of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu – both fighting over sharing of water due to the deficit monsoon this year . The water requirement of Bengaluru is met more and more from cauvery water now with the filling up of nearby water bodies . In Bengaluru , the spread of water bodies has reduced by nearly 80 % in the last four decades while its population has seen a 47 % growth . Currently , Bengaluru draws 23.10 mcft of water per year from Cauvery and the demand is only increasing . The situation has further complicated with falling groundwater table and low-rainfall being recorded in Kodagu , the river ' s source , because of reckless destruction of fragile ecology . The most powerful and poignant commentary on the boiling Cauvery cauldron came from India ' s waterman Rajendra Singh when he said : " The real threat is to Cauvery river itself . It has been treated as a commodity .”
SPECIAL FEATURES River Nile I The Greek historian Herodotus opined that “ Egypt was the gift of the Nile ”. It played a vital role in shaping the 5000 year old Egyptian civilization which began with the pharaonic period spans over 3,000 years , beginning when the first dynasty started in 3000 B . C . The majestic Nile , a large river flows north from its origin at Lake Victoria to its delta in Egypt at Mediterranean Sea , a distance of 6,650 kilometres . The basin area is about 3.3 million square KM . encompasses ten countries ; Ethiopia , Sudan , Egypt , Rwanda , Tanzania , Uganda , Burundi , the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Eritrea , and Kenya . The shape of the Nile River Valley resembles a lotus flower , the ancient Egyptian symbol for the regeneration of life . The long , narrow river valley is the stem , the delta that spreads out in the shape of a triangle is the flower , and Fayyum Region is a bud . For centuries , the Nile River flooded the valley , enriching the land with a thick layer of alluvial soil . Flooding occurred from July to September as the result of the tropical rains in the Ethiopian table land . The river attained its highest level in October . Then it
