Mighty Mite in Orange Ready for Sophomore Year By Scott Taylor Photos Courtesy Syracuse University Winnipeg’s Stephanie Grossi fell in love with Syracuse University on her first visit to the campus. After accepting her hockey scholarship, she paid back her coaches by winning College Hockey America’s Rookie of the Year Award. After a summer working out at Focus Fitness, she’s back at Syracuse ready to rip it up again. 84 GAME ON SEPTEMBER 2015 B y her own admission, Winnipeg’s Stephanie Grossi could not have imagined how well her first year of NCAA women’s hockey could have transpired. The 5-foot-2 mighty mite fell in love with Syracuse University on her first visit to the campus. She was impressed with her coaches, thrilled at how well her new teammates accepted her and amazed that the courses she wanted were so readily available. But on the ice, life was like a dream. In 36 games, she scored nine goals and dished out 20 assists. She was Syracuse women’s hockey rookie of the year, was conference (CHA) rookie of the year and was one of six nominees for NCAA rookie of the year. She tied for the scoring lead among freshmen in the CHA and was tied for the team lead in scoring. She won multiple rookie of the week and rookie of the month and player of the week
