BISONS WOMEN NAMED ALL-STARS The University of Manitoba Bisons women’s stars Alexandra Anderson, Rachel Dyck and Lauryn Keen have been named 2016- 17 Canada West women’s hockey First Team All-Stars while Venla Hovi and Erica Rieder were selected as Second Team All-Stars and Sheridan Oswald was named to the 2016-17 Canada West All-Rookie Team. The Bisons led the conference with six all-star selections. Anderson, 20, completed her third season at Manitoba and had a breakout campaign to earn her first selection. The Winnipeg prod- uct was second in conference scoring among defensemen with four goals and 18 points while playing in 27 regular season games. She was also named a second team All-Canadian. Dyck, 21, finished her fourth season with the Bi- sons and earned her second conference all-star selection (Second Team in 2014-15). She was also a second-team All-Canadian. In 22 games this season, the Winnipeg Beach product was fourth in Canada West Goals Against Average with a 1.51 mark and second in the conference in Save Percentage at .931 while sporting a 15-6-1 record MORE PRAISE FOR WINNIPEG’S ADAM BROOKS… AND HIS DAD Winnipeg’s Adam Brooks has had a remarkable career boost since John Paddock took over as head coach and GM with the Re- gina Pats. Brooks, one of Manitoba’s best U-16 players – ever – wallowed on the fourth line – or the bench -- for two seasons before Paddock showed up and freed his gifted goal scorer to go out and score goals. But Brooks has meant even more. He’s a great penalty killer and has developed into one of the WHL’s best 200-foot players. This week, he was named the Regina Pats’ Second Star for the season and winner of the Fan Favourite Trophy. In 65 games this season, Brooks has 42 goals and 127 points and is second in WHL scoring to his friend and linemate Sam Steel (50 goals and 131 points in 65 games), the Pats’ Player of the Year. Last season Brooks had 120 points and with a big playoff finish this year, there is no reason to believe the 5-foot-10, 175-pound centre couldn’t make the Toronto Maple Leafs next season. Of course, it’s one thing to be a good hockey player. It’s another to be a great person. Carson Rybuck, the star forward with the MMJHL’s Raiders Jr. Hockey Club, views Brooks as more than just a good hockey player. “It’s great seeing a friend and a guy I know and respect do so well,” said Rybuck. “He’s an amazing guy and he has a great dad (Scott Brooks) who has always been an important hockey guy for me. Adam’s dad has always provided words of encouragement and I’ve always liked taking advice from him.” • • • • • (tied for most confer- ence wins).
