the final as Grace Ostertag, Clair DeGeorge
and Georgia Keogh scored for Shattuck.
Co-incidentally, the gold, silver, and bronze
medalists were exactly the same as last year:
1. Shattuck, 2. POE, 3. St. Mary’s.
St. Mary’s beat the Minnesota Revolution
4-3 to win the bronze medal as Sarah Denne-
hy, Holly Reuther, Ashley McFadden and Alexi
Cheveldayoff
scored for the
Flames.
For the host
team, it was
a bittersweet
result. While
the
team
was pleased
with winning
its
second
consecutive
bronze medal,
and third in
four years, this group is still hungry for that
elusive gold medal.
With only four seniors (Hailey Cloutier,
Karlee Mazor, Holly Reuther, and Captain KK
Thiessen) moving on after this season, head
coach Larry Bumstead likes the team’s early
chances going into next season. The team
has both goaltenders – Logan Angers and
Julianna Thompson -- back in the fold next
season while Thomson will be a part of the
team for the next two seasons.
“We are only losing one forward (Reuther),
and we like the leadership we have in the
room,” said head coach Larry Bumstead.
“The players returning next year have
learned a lot from the current leadership and
seniors on the team this season.”
Bumstead was pleased for his four seniors,
great players who ended this portion of the
hockey careers with a medal ion one of the
toughest tournaments of their hockey lives.
“KK has earned a scholarship to Mercy-
hurst and she was my first Grade 9 student
to ever play on the team,” said Bumstead.
“For her to win three bronze in four years is
really unique.”
Additionally,
Cloutier, Mazor,
and
Reuther
will
graduate
with two bronze
medals them-
selves.
H o w e v e r,
while the tour-
nament
itself
was outstand-
ing, Bumstead
noted that with
the volunteers,
it would never take place.
“Volunteers, make this event run so well
and be such an enjoyable experience,” he
said. “The way the SMA family, the school,
and everybody just steps up make it a great
experience is commendable.”
The Flames coach gave much of the credit
to the success of the tournament to indi-
viduals such as Kathy Bumstead (Manager,
Organizing Committee), and Connie Yunyk
(President, St. Mary’s Academy).
“I see alumni here, and I see people that
just show up and volunteer which you just
do not see anywhere else,” added Bumstead.
“Just as important, has been the dedication
and support from all of the parents. That
can’t be understated.”
Tournament location is also another con-
tributing factor to the ongoing success of
the Female World Sport School Challenge.
With the MTS Iceplex having four sheets of
ice available, the entire tournament draw
can be played in one location. Additionally,
with the Press Box Restaurant on site, all
eight teams were able to plan and organize
post game meals, as well.
“Tournament organizers and
teams said they were very ap-
preciative of MTS Iceplex Head
Chef, Leonard Church and the
work his staff did in preparing
the team meals,” said Bumstead.
“While the overall work of the
MTS Iceplex staff led by General
Manager, Monte Miller certainly
contributes to the success of the
event.
While, the coach would not yet
tip his hand as to who he has on
his radar to replace his four de-
parting seniors for next season,
he is quite optimistic about the
team’s chances.
“I’m also proud of what the
team has accomplished this sea-
son,” he said. n
