NORTH WINNIPEG SATELLITES After four years in the league, all-star defenseman Howard Grieves has com- pleted a tremendous Jr. B career with the Satellites and GM Cliff Malzensky admits he’s not sure if he’ll be able to replace him. However, on the upside, Malzensky has most of his top scorers back for 20 17-18. “I have my leading scorer, Nico Lisi, back and so is our No. 3 scorer Braden Zamrykut and our No. 4 scorer Nathan Jones,” Malzensky said. “The key to our success this season might be our 17-year-old goal- tender Wyatt Emes. He was so good last year that without him, we would have been nowhere last year.” Emes, who was a 16-year- old last season went 11-12-1 with a 4.32 goals against aver- age and a .887 save percent- age, and kept the Satellites in a number of games. “We have some good young prospects, but it’s not going to be easy replacing Grieves,” Malzensky said. “But we have some good young prospects and with players like Glen Paupenekis, Payton Boguski and Parker Cassie back, we should be in good shape.” PEGUIS JUNIORS The Ice Dawgs Score ARBORG ICE DAWGS The Arborg Ice Dawgs had a tremendous season in 2016- 17, finishing with a record of 24-10-0-0, first in the Central. Arborg lost the league final in six games to Peguis, but reached the Bronze Medal game at the Keystone Cup, which was held right in their own barn. This year, club President Ivan Gulay has found himself a new GM in Scott Bobbee and a new/old head coach in Jim Wierbicki, who has already won two KJHL champion- ships, so the IceDawgs will pretty much pick up where they left off. “Most of the age eligible players have committed to us for the new season,” Gulay said. “We have lost goalie Dylan Ossachuk, who has moved on to Jr. A with Thief River Falls, so we’re on the lookout for a new goalie this year. “But we will be very com- petitive once again and we’ll have a lot of good, talented local guys, as well.” Leading scoring Clint Torfason (28 goals and 65 points in 34 games), No. 2 scorer Colton Davies and No. 4 scorer Derric Gulay and all eligible to return but the Ice Dawgs will lose 26-goal scorer Spencer Kilbrei and No. 1 defenseman Ryan Pochailo. There is no doubt, the Dawgs will be in the hunt at the end. “What we want to do this year is to get faster,” said Bruce Sinclair, manager of the Juniors. “When we played in the Keystone Cup, these teams from Alberta and Saskatchewan were a lot faster than us. We have to get to that level this year. “I think we have a chance to repeat as champions,” Sinclair added. “We only lose four players, (Tyler) Woodhouse, (Theoren) Spence, (Waylon) Nault and (Devun) Garson. Those are big shoes to fill, but we have the young players who can step up. I think we’re going to take a lot of A.P.s this season and get a really good look at our young players. “For us, in order to repeat, we need to make sure that (Luke) Penner is back. We ex- pect him back this year and we need him because he is a very good goaltender and we know you can’t win without great goaltending.” Outstanding North Winnipeg Satellites goalie Wyatt Emes Devun Groot of the Juniors 4 2 | G AM E O N | S E P T EM BER 2 0 1 7
