Winnipeg ’ s Michael Stone signs big deal with Calgary
Winnipeg ’ s Michael Stone got paid .
Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving decided he would not wait until the beginning of the unrestricted free agency frenzy on Saturday and decided to get Stone done as quickly as possible .
The Flames GM re-signed Stone , a righthanded-shooting defenseman who is the brother of Ottawa Senators star Mark Stone , to a three-year contract extension worth $ 10.5 million .
Stone , 27 , opted out of the NHL ’ s free agent market to remain with the Flames . Calgary had acquired the 6-foot-3 , 210-pounder with the booming shot from the Arizona Coyotes just prior to the February trade deadline .
ELLINGSON WINS MJHL / IBAM SCHOLARSHIP
sWan Valley Stampeder Cody Ellingson , a hometown boy from Swan Rover , was named the 2017 recipient of the Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba ( IBAM )/ MJHL scholarship . Ellingson was presented a $ 2,000 cheque at this year ’ s IBAM President ’ s dinner staged at RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg .
Ellingson will be attending the University of Regina this coming fall where he is enrolled in pre-med studies .
“ This scholarship will assist me in my post-secondary education finances ,” said Ellingson . “ I ’ m also hoping to continue my hockey career at U of R , and eventually work in the field of sports medicine .”
Ellingso was the Stamps ’ team captain this past season . In his three seasons with the Stamps the 6-foot forward recorded 87 points ( 33- 54 ) in 158 games .
“ A goal right when I got traded here was to stay in Calgary and not only for the fact that we ’ re close to family ,” Stone , whose wife is a Calgarian , told the Canadian Press . “ But it ’ s a really good hockey club . That ’ s something I haven ’ t been part of a whole lot .”
“ Ddo you believe in climate change ? Whether you ’ re super pumped that we are putting “ Americans first ,” or you are absolutely outraged at the idea that we are taking yet another step backwards in dealing with a major global problem , the only way to solve this argument is to try and set your own agenda aside and see how this affects everybody . The only lie we tell ourselves is that we are more special than other life forms on the planet . Well , we ’ re not . Even if we weren ’ t responsible for any major climate catastrophes heading our way , shouldn ’ t we still do our part to preserve what we have left ? The same way we shouldn ’ t wait ‘ till our bodies break down completely to start doing the right things to stay healthy , let ’ s not wait ‘ till it ’ s too late to do something . I am not saying I am perfectly ‘ green ,’ but the first step is to keep an open mind and try to learn what you don ’ t already know .”
