Winnipeggers ’ Keith Morris , Matt Bailey and Hudson Friesen ( now with the Bisons ) also accepted scholarships to Anchorage … Anthony Kehrer of the RHA Nationals Midgets , who was selected in the second round of last spring ’ s Western Hockey League bantam draft by the Brandon Wheat Kings , says he has decided against taking the WHL route and has verbally committed to the University of Wisconsin . He ’ s starting his Grade 11 year at Shaftesbury … Defensemen Caitlin Fyten will be the captain of the University of Manitoba Bisons women ’ s hockey team this season . Defenseman Erica Rieder is an assistant captain for the season while forwards Alana Serhan and Alanna Sharman will rotate as assistant captains during home and road games for the upcoming season … Forward Brett Stovin , one of the real class acts in all of Manitoba hockey , has been named captain of the University of Manitoba Bisons men ’ s hockey team this season . Defensemen Adam Henry and Channing Bresciani plus forwards Michael St . Croix and Nick Zajac are the assistant captains . No surprises there . Nolan Patrick ’ s first NHL goal
Calvin Pickard , a Winnipegger , was dealt in early October to the Toronto Maple Leafs . He was sent to the American Hockey League ’ s Marlies and played well in his first start , but is still wearing his Las Vegas Golden Knights mask … Winnipeg ’ s Nolan Patrick scored his first NHL goal for the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct . 10 , in a 6-5 loss to Nashville . Winnipeg ’ s Dale Weise drew the assist . A week later , Patrick assisted on Weise ’ s first goal of the season … Brandon ’ s Jordy Stallard , a Winnipeg Jets sixthround draft pick two years ago , got off to a great start with the WHL ’ s Prince Albert Raiders this season . During the first week of October , Stallard had a sixpoint night , one goal and five assists , in a 6-1 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers . All five of his assists were primary assists . At that time of the season ,
Stallard leads the Raiders in scoring with three goals and 11 points in the first six games … As we get closer to the 2018 World Junior Championship , there is still a chance three Manitobans could be on the team : Oakbank ’ s Brett Howden , Winnipeg ’ s Cody Glass and Brandon ’ s Tanner Kaspick … Last season , we wrote a story about Taeron Lewis ( Winnipeg Blues ), David Robertson ( Steinbach Pistons ) and the NCAA Division III champion Norwich University Cadets . The team also included a Saskatchewan product and former Selkirk Steelers goaltender Braeden Ostepchuck . This year , the Cadets have added Boissevain ’ s Carter Cowlthorpe ( Virden Oil Capitals ). The Cadets have made great use of the graduates of the MJHL … This year , the Manitoba Junior Hockey League awarded a total of $ 3,000 in scholarships to four graduating players : Tanner Lewis ( Winkler Flyers / Brandon University ), Carter McMurdo ( Portage Terriers / Red River College ), Maverick Rafter ( OCN Blizzard / University of Winnipeg ) and Brandon Holtby ( Dauphin Kings / University of Regina ) each won a $ 750 scholarship to a Canadian postsecondary institution … Dauphin ’ s Barry Trotz , the head coach of the Washington Capitals , said this when he passed Hall of Famer Dick Irvin for sixth all-time on the games coached list : “ It ’ s awkward . You pass the people you idolized and it feels awkward .”
SJHL AND MJHL TO LAUNCH JOINT SHOWCASE
The Saskatchewan Jr A Hockey League and the Manitoba Jr A Hockey League have joined together to play host to the First MJHL / SJHL Showcase . The event will be held at the Co-operators Center in Regina on Jan . 15 and 16 , 2018 .
The Showcase will feature the top 60 players from each league . The three teams from each league will consist of players from the ages 16-to-20-years-of-age selected by the coaches from each league . One team will be comprised of players who are 18 and under . The other two teams will be made up of players who are 19 and 20 years of age . Each team in the event will play two games .
“ The MJHL is extremely excited about the opportunity to collaborate with the SJHL by showcasing the top players in our league in a new event that gives our players a chance to showcase their skills and abilities for Scouts from all higher levels of hockey ,” said Kim Davis , the Commissioner of the Manitoba Jr A Hockey League . “ When discussing what the league could do to promote its players even more than it currently does , the two leagues jointly determined that an event such as this would fit the need for player and Scouts .”
