The most important person
in Nicolas Burmey’s hockey
career is his father. That’s not
a big surprise. Hockey and
dads go hand-in-hand.
But for Burmey, dad has
been important to him in
many more ways. While
Nicholas, the captain and
leading scorer of the Manitoba
Major Junior Hockey League’s
St. Boniface Riels, is one of
the best junior hockey players
in the province, he’s also
used his time in the MMJHL
to study engineering at the
University of Manitoba.
Again, it comes as no
surprise: His father is a
Structural Engineer with the
City of Winnipeg so the apple
doesn’t fall far from the tree.
“My Dad and I would work
on drills on the outdoor
rink and talk about what I
did good in games,” Nicolas
said. “My dad always made

suggestions on what I could
do differently. My dad has
also taken me along to some
of his engineering projects
which have always peeked
my interest. That’s why,
just like him, I want to be
a Structural Engineer.”
At the midway point of
the 2017-18 season Burmey
and his Riels are outside the
playoffs looking in. On the
bright side, up is the only way
to go from here and the team’s
captain, a guy who combines
brains with sheer athleticism,
is the man that head coach
Ryan Frykas expects to lead
the Riels out of the wilderness.
Burmey is in his third year
with the Riels – and his first
year of Engineering at the
U of M. This is a young man
who is undaunted by the
task he faces. He is captain
of the youngest squad in the
league (the Riels have only
