PROFILE NICOLAS BURMEY Engineering the Future B Y J O H N P L O S Z AY Photos by James Carey Lauder The most important person in Nicolas Burmey’s hockey career is his father. That’s not a big surprise. Hockey and dads go hand-in-hand. But for Burmey, dad has been important to him in many more ways. While Nicholas, the captain and leading scorer of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League’s St. Boniface Riels, is one of the best junior hockey players in the province, he’s also used his time in the MMJHL to study engineering at the University of Manitoba. Again, it comes as no surprise: His father is a Structural Engineer with the City of Winnipeg so the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. “My Dad and I would work on drills on the outdoor rink and talk about what I did good in games,” Nicolas said. “My dad always made 4 6 | G AME ON | R EGU L A R SEASON ED ITION 2018 suggestions on what I could do differently. My dad has also taken me along to some of his engineering projects which have always peeked my interest. That’s why, just like him, I want to be a Structural Engineer.” At the midway point of the 2017-18 season Burmey and his Riels are outside the playoffs looking in. On the bright side, up is the only way to go from here and the team’s captain, a guy who combines brains with sheer athleticism, is the man that head coach Ryan Frykas expects to lead the Riels out of the wilderness. Burmey is in his third year with the Riels – and his first year of Engineering at the U of M. This is a young man who is undaunted by the task he faces. He is captain of the youngest squad in the league (the Riels have only
