Senior Hockey League) so we
were able to AP him. He isn’t
going to be able to play every
game, but it’s sure nice to have
him back in the lineup.”
One of the most important
aspects of the Fishermen’s
success this season has been
the play of the goaltenders.
Veteran Riley Bannerman is
No. 2 overall in the league this
season with a record of 10-2-2,
a goals against average of 2.59
and a save percentage of .924.
Austin DeBoer is fourth in the
league with an 11-1-1 record
(best in the KJHL), a GAA of
2.78 and a save percentage of
.899. While Peguis goaltenders
Luke Penner and Allan
Kohli are No. 1 and No. 3,
Bannerman and DeBoer are
No. 2 and No. 4.
“It’s always important to get
good, consistent goaltending
and we get that from Riley
and Austin,” said Poponick.
“Overall, our play has been
strong and we’ve done it on
most nights with rookies
taking up half the lineup.
We’re very good right now,
but we’re going to be good
for years to come. We’re very
young and I’m confident this
team will be a contender for a
few more years yet. You don’t
rebuild, you re-load.”
The KJHL Playoffs will start
the week of Feb. 19. Since he
took over as head coach of the
Fish, Poponick has won two
Baldy Northcott Trophies, in
2014 and 2015.
However, you can bet that
the current two-year drought
-- while watching Peguis claim
the league championship --
has Coach Pop chomping at
the bit to show the league how
much his team has already “re-
loaded.” ❍
