KLEYSEN COMMITS TO NIAGARA UNIVERSITY Winnipeg’s Stephen Kleysen, featured in the November issue of Game On Magazine, has committed to the Niagara University Purple Eagles for the 2018-19 season. Kleysen, 20, who plays for the BCHL’s West Kelowna Warriors had nine goals and 33 points to go along with 56 penalty minutes in 73 games in the BCHL. The 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman got off to a strong start this season. Thiessen is off to a great start as a freshman at Mercyhurst University. She’s played in all 12 games for the Lakers this season and scored her first NCAA Division 1 goal against Colgate on Oct. 20… The University of Minnesota- Duluth has three Manitobans on its women’s varsity hockey roster this season – Ashton Bell from Deloraine (the captain of Canada’s U-18 women’s team), Jalyn Elmes from Brandon and Ryleigh Houston from Winnipeg. All three have played all 13 games. Bell is second in team scoring with six goals and nine points, Elmes is third with three goals and eight points and Houston is sixth with five assists… The tip goaltender in the Western Hockey League through Nov. 15 was Altona, Manitoba’s Cole Kehler of the Portland Winterhawks. Kehler, who attended the Jets development camp this year, had a goals against average of 2.08... There are three Manitobans in the Top 10 in scoring in the WHL (through Nov. 15) Brandon’s Ty Lewis (Brandon Wheat Kings) was sixth with nine goals and 31 points in 18 games, Brandon’s Jordy Stallard (a Jets draft pick with the Prince Albert Raiders) was seventh with 13 goals and 30 points and Winnipeg’s Cody Glass of the Portland Winterhawks was 10th with goals and 28 points The Winkler Flyers recently honored their head coach, Ken Pearson, for reaching a major milestone. The pride of Neepawa, recorded his 500th victory as a coach in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. The former player and assistant with the Neepawa Natives, back in the 90s, has the Flyers near the top of the MJHL standings after the first third of the season… The MJHL announced its coaching staffs for the MJHL/SJHL Showcase in Regina on Jan. 15 and 16. MJHL Team 1 (20 and under) will have OCN’s Doug Hedley with Neepawa’s Dustin Howden. MJHL Team 2 (20 and under) will have Winkler’s Ken Pearson with his own assistant, Steve Mullin. And MJHL Team 1 (18 and under) will feature Steinbach’s Paul Dyck with Virden’s Troy Leslie… Jennifer Fleming, the wife of the late U of M and NHL coach Wayne Fleming, flew into Winnipeg last month to hand out the 2017 Fleming Family Hockey Coach Scholarship. This year’s recipient is University of Manitoba Bisons’ captain Brett Stovin. Stovin, 23, has been a certified coach for eight years. The $1,200 scholarship will be applied to his U of M tuition… St. Mary’s Academy Grade 12 student, Hailey Karbonik, a member of the Flames prep team, has committed to play for the University of Ottawa Gee Gees in the fall of 2018…
