Square Enix and developers Eidos-Montréal and Crystal Dynamics have announced Shadow of the Tomb Raider and this time there are no timed exclusive platform agreements on the table. Launching simultaneously on September 14, 2018 for the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 4 Pro, including Windows PC and Steam, this time around Lara Croft is pushed even further than before in her previous outings. Thankfully, the talented Camilla Luddington will make her return as Lara Croft, who has impressively maintained the role since the original reboot back in 2012. Positioned as the third game in series reboot, Shadow of the Tomb Raider intelligently follows the proven formula of the previous two games, however now, after the death of father at the hands of Trininty, Lara aggressively pursues her enemies, while also stumbling upon the knowledge of a primitive Mayan civilization with predictions of the end of the world. Unlike its predeccesors Shadow of the Tomb Raider offers a seemingly darker, more edgy experience. Our brief hands-on revealed a Lara Croft who is no longer surprised by the consequences of her actions. It feels as though Lara has come into herself or at least is beginning to, as she has fully embraced her past decisions. The game has been given a boost in the danger department, sort of reminiscent of the old school Tomb Raiders games where the environments themselves are formidable characters. With far more traps , tomb raidering, and challenging puzzles, the player caution meter has increased keeping you on your toes. If you enjoyed the combat of the previous games then you should be right at home with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Despite the conclusion of Rise of the Tomb Raider, the forces of Trinity are still up to no good and this time Lara has been given some new tricks to shed the blood of her would be enemies. Sure, the combat gameplay is relatively the same, however the visceral takedowns and addictive stealth kills have been impressively updated. The same yet better, the gameplay is smooth and fluid. From the hand-to-hand combat and takedowns, to the use of firearm and the signature and devastating bow, the game feels substantially polished. Our demo showcased more than enough gameplay and environments to send us off already singing the games preview praises. Ultimately, our latest time with Lara already builds on the great ideas of past installments, crafting an experience that pushes the story and gameplay forward. We are excited about the games dark theme and cannot wait to tackle the full experience.
