Gallery259 Analogue Resistance Magazine Vol. 5 | Page 30

Thinking about WW2 (where as a kid I first heard the term 'resistance movement' watching Sunday afternoon war movies) and indeed thinking about any war, some form of resistance movement is usually present.

Resistance expressed in many ways and many forms.

Historically, and sadly in contemporary times we find no shortage of war exemplars in our world and some form of resistance at work in all.

The concept of 'resistance' pervades all worlds, real or fantastical.

Resistance is woven into the fabric of our very existence, it is in our blood.

We know the fields of medicine, micro biology and the sciences observe resistance in the world of all living things.

The Gallery259 Analogue Resistance Mag aspires to be larger than mere arguments about personal preferences or claiming the artistic dominance of analogue media/process over digital media/process. There is zero interest in the 'digital vs analogue' debate/argument but a huge interest in the concept of 'resistance' and what it means.

Resistance can imply the existence of other times, other ways of doing things, a different order of things, a slowing down or something to push back against, to go against the flow.

As we move forward in our present time space capsule we observe artifacts created by processes and technologies in historical time space. We develop an awareness of the great beauty and value outside of our time space knowledge, processes and technology. What some of us see is valued so much that losing the knowledge of 'with what' and 'how' images were made is seen as a tragedy. And ultimately to our contemporary detriment.

Being part of the analogue resistance is about my personal choices. Resistance may be about where I find beauty and the tools I choose to use in creating. My choices are imprinted on my images like birthmarks or DNA and that resonates with me. Sometimes the choice may be a blend of digital and analogue tools, a blending of process and method. Sometimes they may represent an attempt to be purely one or the other.

Just before last xmas I wrote on my FB wall about how 'the analogue resistance' as a concept was about these choices I make. It is way more than the 'either/or' debate which bores me senseless. (not sure if there are still people like that out there?)

To me 'the analogue resistance' is a way of life or a lifestyle, a way of seeing, a way of being.

Ruminating on 'resistance'.
