most of her old age sitting at the doorway in the sun embroidering around pencilled scallops on
pillowslips and Mommy-made petticoats which were very pretty. I doubt whether Granny
Rebecca was ever an emotionally demonstrative mother and grandmother but I always found
her quiet presence soothing and companionable.
Rebecca was extremely careful to always point out that her birth-place, ‘Shrewsbury-inShropshire’, may border Wales but it is firmly fixed in England and not in Wales as it was
considered far superior to be English rather than Welsh. However much she tried to disguise
the fact, she was as Welsh as her name! It seemed though that she was not one of the singing
Welsh, but rather one of the more serious, introverted ones.
Incidentally, when I visited Shrewsbury-in-Shropshire some years ago I found it to be a most
