CELTIC NATIONS’
FRIENDLIES
GERRY HOLMES REPORTING
It was a Halloween treat like no other
when the Galician selection met with a selection of players from Ireland to play two
thrilling games of Gaelic Football on Saturday, October 31st in Santiago Compostela.
It was the second annual game between
the sides. Three months of organisational
work was put into the event this year and
the day was a huge success. Some 25 players
bought flights to come from Ireland. This
included current inter-county players on
both the men’s and ladies teams.
Over 400 people turned out to watch the
game. Incredible considering it was Gaelic
football being played in Spain and not
soccer.

In the Ladies game the Ireland team ran out comfortable
winners in the end. In the opening period the Irish began the
game at full throttle and managed to notch 1-3 without reply.
The Galician girls then began to fight back and started getting
into dangerous positions. Their reward was their first point
of the match. However, this was a very strong Irish side and
their ability to move the ball up the field at pace was exciting
to watch. They were also much more accurate in front of goal.
They continued to put scores on the board throughout the first
half and went in at half time leading comfortably.
