Executive Director’s Message (continued) and other concerned groups to come up with a bill that most will find acceptable. Other topics/bills that may be introduced or revisited are:   Georgia’s Marijuana Laws Texting and Driving (considering our state will again log-in about 1.500 deaths on our roadways in 2017 with many deaths attributed to distracting driving)  Opioid Abuse Related Deaths  Hate Crime Incidents  Various Tax Bills Please mark your calendar as busy for March 14, 2018. On that date, just an eighth of a mile from the Capitol, we will be holding our 2018 GACP Goals Conference. Upon completion of the Goals Conference training session, we will be walking over to the State Capitol for the annual Chiefs Day at the State Capitol. We will be sending out an email in January or early February on this event. I hope the Governor joins us again this year, allowing us to have a photo opportunity with the Honorable Nathan Deal. I am sure you know by now, GACP selected an Assistant Executive Director. This was done only after emailing the job announcement to all GACP members and after posting the opening on several professional websites. We received over 140 applications, but most of the applications lacked the credentials to compete for this multi-faceted position. Nevertheless, a dozen or so outstanding submissions were received and were vetted to determine who will be best suited to be GACP’s first Assistant Executive Director. The position was offered to W. “Dwayne Orrick” in mid-December and he accepted the challenge with enthusiasm. If you don’t know Dwayne, hopefully you will get a chance to meet him at our Winter Training Conference and when you do, wish him well on his new po- sition. Please take a few minutes to read our Training Coordinator’s article, especially the details about our upcoming Winter Training Conference (WTC). Training Coordinator, Monica Duran, in conjunction with the Training Committee, chaired by Calvin Moss, have put together a slate of top -notch instructors. These instructors have been contracted to deliver training classes dealing with contemporary law enforcement struggles such as recruitment and retention. On the social side of our upcoming conference, I encourage you all to attend our GACP Reception on Monday evening starting at 6:00 pm. The caterer that will be used by the conference center is the same as last year. They did an outstanding job with food that can be described as plentiful and delicious. The cost of the reception and the breakfast foods served at the conference center is built into your registration fees. Thank you for your commitment to the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police and to law enforcement excellence. Respectfully, Frank Vincent Rotondo Frank Vincent Rotondo Executive Director www.gachiefs.com • Page 5 • 1st Quarter Newsletter
