But how do you make it relevant to each student? 1 Get the right people All students should have at least one face-to-face guidance interview with a careers adviser by the age of 16, with the opportunity for a further interview by 18. All careers advisers must hold a Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development. OTHER WAYS TO ASSIST Personal guidance can be complemented in a number of ways such as providing: group sessions on subjects including apprenticeships, university routes and employability skills advice at parents’ evenings drop-in sessions at lunch-times support on exam results day 2 Listen, listen, listen A guidance interview should be an opportunity for young people to discuss their life aims, skills, expectations and goals. Start by encouraging each student to consider their interests, what they want to achieve and what they feel they are good at. An important part of a guidance interview is to challenge students’ assumptions of themselves. Why do they think certain careers are out of reach? Can the skills they have be used in a variety of industries? Is further education the right route for them? 5 Look to local industry Many students are unaware of the vast majority of jobs available, whether locally or nationally. Introduce ideas around local market forces o r e x am in e n at io n al shortages – in STEM subjects or teaching, for example. Develop strategies Once students have identified a career or further education route, signpost information and examples to help them work out how to achieve their goals, from websites and university prospectuses to careers events such as The Big Bang Fair in Birmingham for young scientists and engineers. 6 Build confidence A key part of personal guidance interviews is helping students develop the confidence and skills needed to succeed. This could be helping them with CV writing, mock interviews, presentation techniques or job coaching. FUTURE TALENT // 55
