“At✸the✸last✸Explorers✸Group✸we✸were✸allowed✸
to✸use✸the✸microscopes✸that✸Dr✸Rossington✸
brought✸in✸from✸Salford✸University.✸We✸
collected✸objects✸we✸were✸interested✸in✸
from✸around✸the✸building✸and✸outside✸in✸the✸
playground,✸then✸used✸the✸microscopes✸to✸look✸
at✸them✸close-up.✸This✸meant✸that✸we✸could✸see✸
what✸they✸looked✸like✸in✸lots✸of✸detail.✸
I✸gathered✸diff✸erent✸types✸of✸leaves,✸a✸feather,✸
the✸top✸of✸a✸carrot✸-and✸my✸Dad✸even✸caught✸a✸
live✸spider!✸
We✸tried✸to✸take✸pictures✸of✸the✸images✸using✸
my✸Mum’s✸iPad✸but✸it✸was✸quite✸diffi
✸✸cult.✸
I✸also✸collected✸samples✸from✸the✸carpet✸
and✸around✸the✸bin.✸They✸contained✸lots✸of✸
dead✸skin✸and✸bacteria,✸which✸were✸pretty✸
DISGUSTING!✸
Dr✸Rossington✸set✸up✸his✸big✸microscope✸for✸us✸
to✸look✸at✸bed✸bugs,✸head✸lice✸and✸fleas,✸which✸
were✸also✸GROSS!✸(-Though✸the✸boys✸liked✸
looking✸at✸those!)✸
Next✸month✸we’ll✸be✸able✸to✸stain✸some✸cells✸
and✸mount✸them✸onto✸slides,✸before✸getting✸
a✸good✸look✸at✸them✸under✸the✸microscope.✸
We’re✸going✸to✸learn✸how✸to✸draw✸what✸we✸see✸
too,✸and✸I✸think✸that✸will✸be✸a✸very✸useful✸skill✸
for✸the✸future.”✸
